Fruit bowl in black clay with playful holes to make your fruit colors stand out and invite you for a fresh snack. This will add a simple and original look to any kitchen.

Inspired by: the pichancha, a traditional colander used for washing maize (corn) since prehispanic times.

Produced: in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca.

Material: pure clay burnished (with no additives). During the production process, they use traditional firing techniques that give its unique black color. These techniques come from ancient times in the state of Oaxaca (300 B.C.) and are still used by artisans.

Each piece is placed inside a wood-fired oven and then smoked to give its black color. Due to this process the pieces have lighter color sections that hint the original clay color, and a silver color sections which derive from how they are positioned in the oven and how much heat they receive. These "imperfections" give its one of a kind identity to each piece.

Bowl measurements: 25x25 cm.

Product care: hand wash.

Handmade with care in Mexico.

Logo Colectivo

Colectivo 1050º is all about nurturing and innovating our ancient traditions from the state of Oaxaca. They create the designs collectively: traditional potters together with designers work to create new concepts using Oaxacan artisanship adapted to contemporary lifestyles.

SHOP OUR SELECTION OF THEIR PRODUCTS >>

Colectivo 1050º was born out of a nonprofit organization "Innovando la tradición" (innovating tradition) which has the main goal to maintain our pottery traditions in Oaxaca. They work with different artisans and provide workshops to develop their skills and provide new tools to continue the creative process sharing ideas and developing pottery techniques.

The future is handemade

Their design process involves artisans together with designers that work together in a workshop project developing ideas and looking into the traditional techniques to then collectively create a unique piece full of culture, design and functionality.

Each of their products have:

  • History that comes from the way the pieces were used in ancient times.
  • Friendly to their environment because clay comes directly from the soil, and is processed in a natural way, with no chemical additives.
  • Century old artisan process that have been perfected across generations.
  • Culture and identity. From the way the artisans work together to develop a piece, as well as how they integrate these production process into their daily traditions. But most importantly, how it reflects a present connected to their ancestors.
  • Everyday usability.

In Mexico we have century old traditions in the production of pottery and they are at the risk of fading away because there is no interest in younger generations to learn the process for making them. For the consumers, it is also hard to value these traditional pottery because there are large volumes of mass produced options. Therefore, the goal is to keep the traditions but also to help the artisans develop theirs skills and create new concepts for the contemporary households.

We turn mud into beauty

We are honored to present to you Mexican designer brands that are giving a contemporary view of our handmade and ancient traditions. Each one of them has decided to take a piece of our daily traditions, have studied it, and then, with a design concept in mind, have taken it to the next level to present high-quality products with a modern view for you to be able to incorporate them into your daily life.

artisans textile work

What makes us happy is to be able to share with you their vision in our Mexican culture, and allow you to take a piece of culture into your home.

Most of our designers work with artisans from specialized communities in the handcrafts they work on:

Colorindio co-creating with artisans to develop textiles

  • They support small producers from specific communities and cooperatives.
  • They incorporate the artisans into their creative process to co-create concepts that bring our ancient traditions to life. This helps the artisans to regain confidence in the work they do.
  • They ensure artisans receive a fair payment for their work according to local wages.
  • For textile communities, most of the artisans are women, and they are ensured equal treatment. And because if the flexibility of their handwork they can also work from home. Most of these artisans gather together to create co-operatives to work together and share experiences.
  • A typical artisan working space: at home, in their cooperative, or at the "taller" (workshop) space they start the day taking care of their kids and family, then they find a comfortable space to start working on the textiles. The spaces are usually open which allows feeling the freeze and the natural sound of the animals that surround the environment.
